Nintendo amiibo figures will soon be able to unlock playable samples of classic NES and Super NES titles on the Wii U. The news was revealed during Nintendo’s March 2015 financial results briefing.
Nintendo are planning to release a free downloadable Wii U app later this year, which will allow players to enjoy classic NES and SNES titles using their amiibo figures. Set to launch in the first half of 2015, the new app utilises the GamePad’s NFC functionality to unlock highlighted scenes from the games.
Although the playable classics will have a time limit in place, tapping the amiibo figure on the GamePad again will unlock additional scenes. Using this method players will be able to experience different game scenes, something which Nintendo have likened to changing a game cartridge.
